Catering a small event shouldn't take more planning than the event itself. Whether it's a christening, a birthday or a get-together at home, here's a straightforward way to get it right.

Count heads, then add a few. Work out roughly how many people, then cater for a little more — running out is the one thing you'll remember. As a rough guide, allow a generous spread of sandwiches or wraps per person, plus a couple of sharing bits and something sweet.

Mix grazing with a few hero dishes. A grazing-style spread — platters, sharing boards, bits to pick at — keeps a room relaxed and lets people help themselves. Add one or two warmer, homemade favourites and you've got a proper table without the formality.

Always finish on something sweet. A tray of cakes and traybakes is the easiest way to make a small event feel special. It's also the first thing to disappear.
